6 Fabulous DIY Hair Treatments Using Honey
Posted on 25 April 2016
Honey has been used for countless centuries, especially in traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda for medicinal, as well as nutritional uses. It’s also used in most hair and skincare products.
Honey is a humectant, in other words, it helps in retaining moisture. It is also an emollient, because it helps smoothen and soften hair and skin. In addition, honey, particularly raw honey, is packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. All of these qualities make honey a wonderful moisturizer and conditioner that help in making hair softer, glossier and healthier looking.
Recent studies also indicate that honey’s antioxidant and antibacterial properties may help in removing toxins, fighting environmental damage and in ensuring that your hair and scalp are healthy and in proper working condition. It’s also an inexpensive ingredient that you can add to your beauty regime without guilt.
Need we say more? We’ve compiled some of our favorite DIY hair treatments using honey that are guaranteed to give you results, even after the first wash.
- Simple Honey Shine Treatment
Coat damp hair with raw honey and cover with a shower cap for 10-30 minutes. Alternatively, you can thin out the honey by mixing ¼ cup raw honey with water, as needed depending on your hair type and length. Wash your hair as usual. Since this treatment is simple and quick, you can include it in your regular routine to get shinier, silkier and more manageable hair. It’s a great tip for women with thick, curly locks.
- Honey with Lemon Juice for Hair loss
This is a popular remedy for hair loss and dandruff. Simply mix 1 tablespoon of honey with 1 tablespoon lemon juice and massage the mixture into hair and scalp. You may have to increase the amount of honey and lemon juice, if you have thicker or longer hair.
If you can handle the stench, you can also try using onion juice instead of lemon juice in this recipe.
- Honey and Apple Cider Vinegar Conditioner
ACV has been talked about everywhere for the last few years – in news articles, forums and even celebrity Instagram posts, for all the good reasons. Not only does it make a delicious salad dressing, but it also acts as a natural conditioner, making your hair silky and shiny.
Mix ¼ of a cup of raw honey with 150 ml (10 tablespoons) of ACV and apply after shampooing to wet hair. Let the mixture sit for a few minutes and rinse with warm water. Alternatively, you can also apply the mixture before your shower to damp hair and wait 15 minutes before washing it off.
- Honey and Olive oil Moisture Mask
Oil treatments work wonderfully on scalp and hair and produce massive results within a few uses. Combining olive oil with honey will help repair damaged hair and reduce dryness. Prepare the mask with 2 parts honey and one part olive oil, mix and warm the mixture slightly, if needed. Apply to damp hair and leave it for at least 20 minutes.
- Honey and Coconut Oil Hydrating Treatment
This is another moisturizing oil and honey treatment, but it’s lighter than the olive oil mask. Furthermore, coconut oil has antibacterial and antifungal properties, making it a great remedy for dandruff and dry scalp. Warm 3 tablespoons of coconut and mix it with ¼ cup of honey. Massage into damp hair and leave it for at least 15 minutes.
- Flower Power: Dandruff Destroyer with Honey and Hibiscus
Hibiscus leaf is a prominent ingredient in ancient ayurvedic medicine, particularly for treating dandruff. Turn hibiscus leaves into a paste and mix it with 1 tablespoon of honey – the paste should be enough to cover your entire scalp. Massage into scalp and damp hair and let the mask sit for 15-20 minutes before rinsing with warm water.
