How to take care of your extensions

do you prefer making sure their luster remains for a much longer time? We’re pretty sure you choose the latter.

Taking care of your extensions isn’t rocket science but it is an ongoing process that requires some commitment. Keep reading for our top tips on how you can make the maximum use out of your extensions:

  1. Wash with care

This may be a no-brainer to some but many women don’t understand that although hair extensions don’t get as dirty as your real hair, it is important to wash them regularly and carefully.

Detangle the extensions first and then begin shampooing with a good conditioner. Take it slow – don’t be vigorous like you are with your real hair. Detangle gently while shampooing and rinsing. You can use a wide-toothed comb but we can’t stress enough on how gentle you have to be.

  1. Don’t forget to condition

Using a nourishing leave-in conditioner is a great way to maintain your hair extensions. Spray the conditioner and work the product into the hair using a downward motion, combing away any tangles. Leave your extensions to dry (we suggest air drying) before using them.

Avoid using too many products as well as this may leave your hair limp and prone to becoming dirty again too soon.

  1. Avoid heat

Heat is any hair’s arch nemesis. The more you expose your hair to heat, the more you shorten its lifespan. Therefore, it is critical that you limit use of flat irons, blow dryers and curling irons. While it is ideal to let your hair dry naturally, you can allow your hair to air dry slightly and then finish it off with a blow dryer. Use a soft bristle brush for combing your hair and start from the bottom, detangling the ends before you comb your hair from the scalp.

  1. Brush properly

Speaking of brushing your hair, brushing your extensions often using a soft bristle brush can help prolong their lifespan. Brush your hair patiently and with care – do not do it in a hurry as it can break hair and cause knots.

  1. Avoid alcohol-based hair products

Alcohol can dry your hair, making it loose its sheen and become duller. Additionally, drying your hair can also make it brittle and susceptible to tangling. Using too many alcohol-based products and not properly washing your hair after can weaken the bonds and increase shedding too.

  1. Wear a swimming cap

Prolonged exposure to saltwater and chlorine can make your hair dry and knotty. Therefore, always wear a swimming cap to prevent contact between your extensions and the salt or chlorine in the water you’re swimming in. After swimming, wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner.

Keeping your hair tied back into a ponytail is a great way of protecting it while you exercise – the same rule applies for sleeping as well.
